The United Nations has confirmed that seven peacekeepers of the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur have been killed in an attack by suspected Arab militiamen. UN headquarters in New York said a peacekeeping convoy was ambushed by heavily-armed militiamen in North Darfur.
Twenty-two troops were also reportedly injured, seven of them critically. A UN spokesperson said the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon, had condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms. The notorious Arab Janjaweed militia are suspected of being behind the attack. The attack was the latest in a series of violent encounters between militia groups and UNAMID since its arrival in the Darfur in December, 2007.
