Former communist allies of India's government have formally withdrawn their support and demanded a confidence vote in parliament over a controversial nuclear deal with the United States.
The parties had announced their decision on Tuesday soon after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he would press ahead with the deal. The leaders of the parties say the nuclear deal would compromise India's strategic sovereignty. The Congress-party-led government hopes the newly-won support of a regional party will help it survive a vote of confidence and avert early elections. Under the civilian nuclear agreement, the US has promised to provide India access to civilian nuclear technology and nuclear fuel in exchange for international safeguards on India's nuclear reactors.
