NATO states have signed accession protocols for Albania and Croatia, setting them on the path to entry into the Western military pact early next year.
The signing ceremony at the alliance headquarters in Brussels was largely a formality after NATO leaders agreed in April to usher the two Balkans countries into the 26-member organisation. However a third NATO aspirant, Macedonia, was absent from the event after its accession goal was blocked by Greece in a long-running dispute over its name.
