A shootout in front of the United States consulate in Istanbul has left six people dead.
The provincial governor told media that three policemen were killed along with three armed attackers. Two other people were reported to be injured. US consular officials say that none of their staff was hurt. It is unclear who was behind the attack or what the motivation was. Turkey has experienced armed attacks by a number of militant groups in the past including Kurds, leftists and Islamists.
