South African President Thabo Mbeki has held first talks with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe since his counterpart's re-election last week.
But opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai refused to speak with Mbeki, whom Tsvangirai accuses of siding with Mugabe. Mbeki was in Harare to try and convince both sides to form a unity government but both Mugabe and Tsvangirai have shown little willingness to negotiate. Mbeki is now travelling to Japan to participate at the G-8 summit of the world's leading industrial nations. The White House has said it expects heads of state at the summit to condemn strongly Mugabe over the poll.
