The European Commission has unveiled a package of proposals that would make it easier for EU citizens to get medical care anywhere in the 27-nation bloc without having to get permission at home first.
Under the plans, a patient's national health service would be required to pay for the treatment received in another EU country, as long as it would have paid for it to be done at home. European Health Commissioner Androulla Vassilou told reporters in Brussels that she still expected to most people to seek medical care at home. But she said the changes could help people living in border regions in particular seek specialised care that can be best provided in another country.
