German President Köhler visits Croatia ... on legal challenges to the text.
The president's office said in a statement that Köhler had agreed to comply with a request from the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. The adoption of the Lisbon Treaty is being challenged by The Left party and a member of the Bavarian conservative Christian Social Union. The court has not yet set a date to rule on the challenges. Both the lower and upper houses of parliament have approved the treaty, which is meant to streamline decision making in the 27-member EU. Nineteen nations have ratified the treaty, but Irish voters rejected it in a referendum earlier this month. All EU states have to ratify the document for it to come into force. It isn't clear how the Irish no vote can be overcome.
