Its regional government says Monday's quake left nearly five million survivors homeless. The confirmed death toll stands at 22,000 with thousands more still buried and losses estimated at 50,000. On Friday at least 17 survivors were dug out of rubble by Chinese troops and emergency workers, some after amputations. Damage to several dams and landslides in rivers pose new threats. President Hu Jintao, who's flown to Sichuan, admitted that rescuers still faced a "daunting challenge." Correspondents say the 7.9-magnitude quake flattened entire towns. Chinese anger has focused on collapsed school buildings that trapped thousands of children. The European Union has pledged initial aid of two million euros. It's already sent a special assessment team to Sichuan.
