The former Soviet republic Ukraine officially joined the World Trade Organisation on Friday, becoming the body's 152nd member.
WTO Director General Pascal Lamy welcomed Ukraine, saying that this will strengthen the multilateral trading system. Ukraine's admission to the trade organisation ahead of Russia gives Kiev a role in difficult negotiations with Moscow, which have already proven to be delicate.
