Domestic violence victims often become targets of stalking after they divorce their violent male or female partner. Stalking is criminally prosecuted in several EU countries, Stehlikova said. Stalkers usually bother their victims with e-mails, text messages, telephone calls or unwanted gifts focusing later on damaging the things belonging to their victim, for instance their cars.
Threats and physical assaults usually follow stalking. Stalking as a criminal offence once appeared in the draft new criminal law which is under preparation but it later was deleted from it. Domestic violence has been legally prosecuted in the Czech Republic since June 2004. Since the beginning of 2007, the law has enabled the Czech police to evict a person who attacks his/her family members from the joint household for ten days. The measure is aimed to protect the violence victims. A total of 854 male and 8 female perpetrators were forced to temporarily leave their homes last year. Police intervened in 6112 cases of domestic violence.
