EU Abolishes Last Passport Checks at Airports ... border checks. The Czech Interior Ministry said in reaction Austria's measures were in accordance with EU legislation. The ministry pointed out that the checks concerned all of Austria's neighbours, not only the Czech Republic. However, Buxbaum told journalists in Brno, south Moravia, on Wednesday that Austria would not renew checks at the border with the Czech Republic during the championship. Checks at the Austrian-Czech border were lifted only six months ago when the Czech Republic joined the Schengen area, along with other new EU member countries. Gollia told CTK that Buxbaum probably wanted to say that the checks would not be reintroduced generally and permanently. Gollia said checks would not be performed during the whole month and at all border crossings, but rather only a few days at some crossings where problematic soccer fans could try to enter Austria. Austria indicated that it would reintroduce border checks already some time ago. Border checks were reintroduced also during international soccer championships in the past years, including the previous Euro championship in Portugal in 2004 and the World Cup in Germany two years ago. The Czech Interior Ministry said today further information on the security measures will be announced in cooperation with the Austrian Embassy in Prague in the next few days.
