In a televised address Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the Palestinians for 'doing the impossible in keeping the name of Palestine alive'.
His speech came as Palestinians marked the 60th anniversary of the "Naqba," or catastrophe, of the war that followed the creation of Israel and saw around 760,000 Arabs exiled from the Jewish state. The day was commemorated with sirens and rallies in the West Bank. Israeli police used gunfire and tear gas to disperse some protesters at the Erez border crossing between Gaza and Israel.
