The Dalai Lama, who's begun a five-day visit to Germany, has said he's very sadden by the deaths and suffering in China caused by Monday's earthquake in Sichuan province.
The Tibetan spiritual leader, who fled Chinese-ruled Tibet in 1959, called for "genuine autonomy" but not independence for his homeland. German citizen held by US forces as terror suspect ... in March, has said it will protest to the German foreign ministry over a planned meeting next Monday in Berlin between the Dalai Lama and Germany's development aid minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul. No meeting is planned with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier or Chancellor Angela Merkel, who angered China by meeting the Dalai Lama last year. She is currently visiting Latin America. The Dalai Lama has met several regional German politicians, and parliament's speaker, Norbert Lambert, in the city of Bochum.
