China's disaster relief office has said that up to 50,000 people are now estimated to have died in the country's worst earthquake in 30 years.
The announcement was made on state media following earlier reports that the death toll had reached 20,000. After bad weather hampered earlier aid efforts the Chinese military has stepped up efforts to gain access to the hardest hit areas in the Sichuan province with dozens of extra helicopters and planes brought in to make aid airdrops.
