German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed a willingness to compromise in negotiations over liberalising global trade.
Speaking to Brazilian and German business delegations in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she said all sides must be ready to make sacrifices, and appealed to the US directly to play a more constructive role. Latin American countries have been demanding more access to the European Union market as well as a cut in agricultural subsidies in the Doha Round of trade talks. Before flying to Lima, Peru for an EU-Latin America summit on Friday, the German chancellor is to visit the Volkswagen factory in Sao Paulo.
