Burma's military junta says that its proposed new constitution was overwhelmingly approved by voters in a referendum held last Saturday.
State radio reported that the draft constitution, which critics say is designed to cement the junta's iron grip on power, was approved by 92 percent of voters. It said voter turnout was more than 99 percent. The Burmese regime held the referendum despite international calls for it to concentrate all of its efforts on delivering aid to the hundreds of thousands of victims of Cyclone Nargis.
