UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has called an emergency meeting on Burma's aid crisis as the country's junta continues to refuse more foreign aid workers.
10 days after a devastating cyclone hit Burma's Irrawaddy Delta, Ban said he would call in representatives of several countries late on Wednesday to discuss a strategy for increasing the humanitarian response. Earlier in the day UN Humanitarian chief John Holmes said that there were now up to 2.5 million people severely affected by the cyclone, with an increasing risk of disease and starvation. Earlier efforts by the Thai Prime Minister to broker a deal on foreign relief with his Burmese counterpart were unsuccessful. Burma is currently in the monsoon season with heavy rainfall worsening access to survivors.
