Rescuers in China are facing extreme difficulties as efforts to search for survivors after Monday's devastating earthquake.
China's official Xinhua new agency reports that more than 8,700 people are dead, most in the southwestern province of Sichuan. The epicentre was located some 100 kilometres of the provincial capital Chengdu. At least 50 middle school students were confirmed dead and hundreds more were missing after their school building collapsed in the 7.8-magnitude quake. Xinhua reported that in one Sichuan province county, 80 percent of the buildings were destroyed. Premier Wen Jiabao hurried to the region shortly after the quake. He called it a "major disaster".
