His meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other leaders on Monday are meant to push forward a truce agreement which is being mediated by Egypt and has already been approved by several armed Palestinian groups, including the armed branch of Hamas. Hamas is demanding that Israel lift its blockade of Gaza as part of any truce deal. But Israel fears Hamas will only use a lull in fighting to rearm and prepare for another round of fighting. Gaza has been virtually sealed by Israel and Egypt since the violent Hamas takeover of the territory last June.
