Under the deal, which is expected to come into effect on Sunday, Sadr's Mehdi Army militia is to lay down its arms, remove snipers, and bombs from roads leading into Sadr City. Meanwhile, Iraqi and US troops have launched a major operation aimed at driving al-Qaeda militants out of the northern city of Mosul. That is thought to be the group's last urban stronghold in Iraq.
