Henin lost to 13th seed Russian, Dinara Safina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. It was the Belgian top seed's first tournament of the year on her favourite surface, clay. Henin has won three times previously in Berlin and is also a four-time French Open Champion. Earlier, third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia was upset by 15th-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko, losing 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
