After first reports that US planes would be allowed to fly in relief supplies, the US ambassador to Thailand retracted the statements, saying permission had after all not been granted. Food, water, and medicine have only been trickling into reclusive Burma after Cyclone Nargis ravaged the central coast at the weekend. UN humanitarian chief John Holmes said help had to reach the one million homeless soon. Burmese state media have reported that 23,000 people were killed and another 42,000 are missing.
