Austrian police say a 73-year-old retired electrician has confessed to imprisoning his daughter for 24 years and fathering seven children with her.
Three of the woman's children had been locked up in a windowless basement with her since birth and had never seen sunlight. The man, Josef F., also admitted to having incinerated the corpse of one child that died shortly after birth. Criticism has arisen in Austria that authorities failed to uncover the abuse for so long but police have rejected accusations of failing to act. The case was exposed on the weekend in the Austrian town of Amstetten and has shocked the country.
