Italy's President Calls for Interim Government ... elected its first right-wing mayor since World War II. Officials said that Gianni Alemanno took almost 54 percent of the vote, defeating Francesco Rutelli, a center-left politician who has held the post twice.
The conservative candidate was seen as the underdog, but Silvio Berlusconi's triumph in national elections two weeks ago bouyed him to victory in a runoff vote. Since 1946, the Italian capital has been governed by Christian Democrat or leftist administrations.
