Voters in the German capital, Berlin, are going to the polls in a non-binding referendum on the future of Tempelhof airport.
The city-state's centre-left government is planning to shut down the airport at the end of October. But a strong vote against the plan could force the government to reconsider. Those in favour of keeping Tempelhof open, point to its history. It was the hub of the Berlin airlift. After the Soviets blockaded West Berlin in 1948, the Allies ferried in hundreds of thousands of tonnes of food and other supplies in a virtually non-stop airlift.
