Kalousek said in the Questions of Vaclav Moravec discussion programme on Czech Television (CT) the Interior Ministry's health insurance company could be in state hands in addition to teh General Health Insurance Company (VZP), the largest insurer in the country. The transformation of health insurance companies into joint-stock companies is part of the reform Health Minister Tomas Julinek (Civic Democrats, ODS) wants to carry out. "It is a matter for politicians, I am but a person who is very knowledgeable about health care and health insurance," Julinek's deputy Pavel Hrobon said on CT when asked whether another state health insurance company besides VZP could function in the Czech Republic. He said, however, VZP was established under law while six companies were founded by private entities and two companies are ministerial - one of the Interior Ministry and the other of the Defence Ministry. The opposition is against Julinek's plans and the trade unions threaten to launch protest actions.
