Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.
Among other things, the two leaders discussed Turkey's efforts to facilitate peace talks between Syria and Israel. Syrian state media quoted President Assad as having pledged to co-operate with Turkey in the interests of promoting regional security and stability. Erdogan told reporters after arriving back in Ankara, that Turkey had launched mediation efforts on the request of both Syria and Israel. Earlier this week, Assad said his country had received an Israeli offer to withdraw from the Golan Heights in return for peace with Syria. Talks between the two countries collapsed in 2000 over the scope of a pullout from the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
