Troubled pop singer Amy Winehouse has been cautioned for common assault, police have confirmed.

The star, whose battle against drug addiction has overshadowed her recording success, spent the night in the cells at Holborn Station in London.

The 24-year-old singer was questioned by police about an alleged assault in north London on Wednesday.

She agreed to attend the station voluntarily but has now left the police building.

"She admitted to a common assault by slapping a man with an open hand and accepted a caution.

"Amy was fully co-operative with inquiries and apologised for the incident. She thanked the police for their professional handling of the matter. There will be no further action taken.

"Amy is looking forward to continuing her work on new music in the studio."

The caution means Winehouse has not been charged, but the incident will remain on the record and could count against her if she is ever charged with a similar offence in future.

A 38-year-old man told police he had been assaulted by a woman in the Chalk Farm area of north London, which is in the borough of Camden.

Police said on Friday that Winehouse had been "in no fit state" to be questioned when she arrived at the station and she was kept in the cells over night.

Also on Friday the singer's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London, where a provisional trial date was set for him to face charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The 25-year-old, who married Winehouse last May, has denied the allegations and is due to stand trial from 2 June.
