Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says his country is ready to negotiate with Israel to find common ground for peace.
While confirming an offer made by Israel, he said there would be no direct talks and that Turkey would mediate. He said Syria had received word from Turkey that Israel was prepared to give back the occupied Golan Heights in return for peace with the Arab state. Israel has declined to comment on the reported offer. Talks between the two countries collapsed in 2000 over the scope of a pullout from the Golan Heights, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
