The United Nations says that the death toll in the five-year Darfur conflict in Sudan may have reached up to 300,000 so far.
UN humanitarian chief John Holmes admitted to the Security Council that the count was just an extrapolation based on a 2006 figure in which 200,000 people had died. Sudan's UN Ambassador Abdalmahmoud Abdalhaleem dismissed the number, saying it was greatly exaggerated. He put the combat death toll at 10,000.
