China to raise military spending ... the move amounted to interference in the country's internal affairs. The Paris city council voted in favour of the move, despite opposition from the party of President Nicolas Sarkozy. The move came as Sarkozy was trying to mend fences with China. The country has seen a rise in anti-French sentiment since the Olympic torch relay was disrupted by protesters in Paris two weeks ago. Chinese demonstrators have held sometimes violent protests outside outlets of the French supermarket Carrefour.
