Italian police have arrested as many as 40 people in connection with a scam to export thousands of litres of fake olive oil.
Police said they seized 25,000 litres of the product, which had been labelled as extra-virgin olive oil, but was in fact vegetable oil mixed with colour- and flavour-additives. The oil was reportedly destined for export to the United States, Germany and Switzerland. It is Italy's third food scandal in recent weeks, following the discovery of the banned pesticide dioxin in Mozzarella cheese and the sale of fake, toxic wines.
