The European Union's foreign policy coordinator, Javier Solana, has arrived in the Afghan capital, Kabul, at the start of a short diplomatic tour of the region.
Solana's office said the visit was aimed at preparing for a June conference in Paris on aid to Afghanistan. Solana was expected to hold talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, government ministers and the speakers of parliament. Solana also planned to meet officials from NATO's International Security Assistance Force and new United Nations envoy Kai Eide.
