Iraq cleric Sadr explains absence ... al-Sadr has threatened Iraq's government with "open war" if it does not stop military operations against his supporters.
He said he was giving the government a "last warning", and urged it to take "the path of peace". Sadr's statement comes as Iraqi troops, with US and UK support, clashed with his Mehdi army in Baghdad and the southern cities of Nasiriya and Basra. News agencies said the Basra fighting was the heaviest since late last month when a government crackdown failed to disarm Sadr's followers and other militias in the southern port city.
