Germany's privatised postal service is ready to strike next week after a fourth round of talks with the Verdi union broke down. Deutsche Post's head of personnel, Walter Scheurle, said that the company would continue talks if Verdi dropped a demand for no increase in working hours.
Scheurle said Verdi must make concessions to keep the group competitive, but a union spokesman called the management's stance "a deliberate incitement to conflict." Verdi is calling for a seven percent pay increase and a guarantee of employment for Deutsche Post workers until 2011.
