Iraqi soldiers backed by British soldiers pushed their way into Hayaniyah, the local stronghold of the Mahdi Army of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. News agencies said it was the heaviest fighting for weeks in Basra, where Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki launched a crackdown on Sadr's followers last month. Troops also detained a number of suspected militiamen. An Iraqi army spokesman said he expected the whole area to be secured by Sunday.
