19.04.2008 - Czech president thanks KDU-CSL for support, praises reforms
Klaus reiterated his pre-election promise that he would respect Christian values within his powers and informal influence in society.
"I am glad that these words of mine met with a positive response and you gave me your votes," said Klaus, who was re-elected president for another five-year term on February 15.
The Christian Democrats have for over a year been an important part of the coalition government that launched fundamental reforms, Klaus said, adding that reforms follow the right direction.

"I know how difficult the decision-making is and how complicated the situation in the coalition is," said Klaus, former prime minister, former long-term head and current honorary chairman of the senior ruling Civic Democrats (ODS).
Klaus also mentioned the fact that the narrow results of general elections in the Czech Republic in the past 12 years did not enable the government to rely on a strong majority in the Chamber of Deputies and have sufficient force to materialise its pre-election plans.
This stirs up tension in the government parties, he said.
Klaus hinted at the fact that the current government coalition of the ODS, the KDU-CSL and the Greens (SZ) has only a fragile majority in the Chamber of Deputies based on uncertain votes of two former opposition Social Democrat (CSSD) deputies.
The Christian Democrats are a traditional, deeply rooted and "healthily conservative" party with a considerable social aspect, Klaus pointed out.
"It [KDU-CSL] constitutes and has constituted a stable centre and thereby a certain keystone in Czech politics," Klaus said, wishing the delegates to the KDU-CSL congress success.
Klaus, who spent about one hour at the congress, was welcomed by KDU-CSL chairman Jiri Cunek who voted for Klaus's rival-candidate, economist Jan Svejnar, in the presidential election.
However, most of the KDU-CSL deputies and senators supported Klaus and considerably contributed to his re-election.
