Following a meeting with Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, Merkel told reporters that the treaty would help ensure the future prosperity of the 27-member bloc. She also said that the system of majority voting contained in the Lisbon Treaty would give smaller countries like Ireland more of a say in the EU. The Lisbon Treaty is meant to replace the failed EU constitution, which was rejected by Dutch and French voters in 2005. Ireland is the only EU country that is putting the new treaty to the voters in the form of a referendum.
