Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has held talks with her Omani counterpart, Yousef bin Alawi, during a visit to Qatar.

It was the first public meeting between the two countries' foreign ministers.

Relations were severed after the start of the second Palestinian uprising, or intifada, in 2000.

Ms Livni is in Qatar to address the Doha Forum on Democracy, Development and Free Trade and to meet a number of Qatari officials.

She has said she hopes to build Arab support for peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabr al-Thani said on Sunday that talks with Ms Livni would focus on ways of calming the situation in the Gaza Strip, the AFP news agency reported.

Qatar has low-level trade relations with Israel but no formal diplomatic ties.
