KSCM to back Czech presidential candidate Svejnar in first round ... of the autumn elections to the Senate and to regional assemblies, the KSCM says. "As far as last night's [verbal] attacks are concerned, including suggestions that I should be sacked [as KSCM head], I've registered no attacks not only on me but on the whole negotiating team either.
The KSCM has caused nothing of what some blame it for," Filip told journalists. He reacted to the statements by Jiri Paroubek, senior opposition Social Democrats (CSSD), who ascribed Klaus's re-election on Friday to what he called Filip's incompetence. Filip today said that Paroubek did not act responsibly when he said that the CSSD's cooperation with the KSCM is threatened in case Filip remained KSCM chairman. Paroubek is incapable of pushing through anything without the Communists and with his own [CSSD] group of deputies being weakened, Filip said. He alluded to the forced departure of Evzen Snitily from the CSSD group of deputies before the election on Friday when he announced that he would support Klaus, candidate of the arch-rival Civic Democrats (ODS), at variance with the CSSD's position. Klaus eventually won the election, defeating economist Jan Svejnar, promoted by the CSSD and the SZ. Klaus was supported by a close majority of 141 of 279 lawmakers present. "If we [the left-wingers] want to promote anything, we are confined to mutual cooperation. If Paroubek minds me personally, there are KSCM deputy chairmen [for him to talk to]," Filip said. He said he can imagine the CSSD-KSCM cooperation in preparing the upcoming polls, and also on the parliamentary level.
