Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has dissolved parliament, paving the way for snap elections.
The move comes after the country's leaders held unsuccessful talks to form an interim government.
The political crisis was triggered by the resignation of Prime Minister Romano Prodi who lost a confidence vote in the Senate in January.
