Doctors believe Havel's big workload had contributed to the worsening of his health. Havel has been plagued with various health troubles for a number of years. He had had a large part of his right lung removed due to a malignant tumour in 1996. Besides, he suffers from chronic bronchitis. Ten years ago, Havel suffered heart rhythm defect and his life was threatened for 30 minutes. In September 24, 2001 Havel was struck by heart arrhythmia and had to cancel a visit to Italy shortly before departure.
